Healthcare is not a privilege it is a right, in view of this, Primary health care (PHC) caters for the majority of a person’s health needs throughout their lifetime. This includes physical, mental and social well-being which is people-centered rather than disease-centered and takes into consideration the whole-of-society and or a community. A primary health care approach includes three basic components:

  • Meeting people’s health needs throughout their lives

  • Addressing the broader determinants of health through multi sectoral policy and action

  • Empowering individuals, families and communities to take charge of their own health.

Through the provision of healthcare in the community as well as their participation, PHC addresses not only individual and family health needs, but also the broader issue of public health and the needs of a specific people group.  People deserve the right to proper healthcare regardless of their status in life.  It further enhances the fulfillment in the millennial development goals which include:

  • Immunization campaigns,

  • Health education and promotion,

  • Reduce child mortality,

  • To improve maternal health,

  • To combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other prevalent diseases,

  • Rehabilitation and palliative care.
